Bret Michaels' heart may be in trouble, but his head is in the right place. The 47-year-old rocker-reality television fixture is preparing to undergo surgery to fix a hole in his heart). But through it all, he's staying optimistic.
Michaels talked to People about the procedure, which he'll have at St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix in January. "I gotta tell ya, I'm very positive," Michaels said. "I feel positive they're going to do an amazing job. They've done thousands of these operations."
The Life As I Know It star has already had to overcome an emergency appendectomy, a brain hemorrhage, and a stroke (which led to the discovery of the hole in his heart). Now the singer, who is also a diabetic, says he's already preparing for this latest operation by switching to a new blood thinner and having his blood sugar monitored.
"I'd say if all goes well, I'll spend about three days in the hospital," Michaels said. "And then about three weeks after that just really, really, really taking it easy."
Post-op will likely be the scariest part of the process for the Poison frontman. "Once you do this operation, your heart, you're hoping there's no infection," he explained. "You’re hoping there's no clot. There's a lot of things you got to watch out for … And being diabetic increases that tenfold."
Still, despite the frightening possibilities that are ahead of him, Michaels is looking on the bright side of things. "It's 95 percent unbelievably great results," he said of this type of procedure. "Of course, there's always the 5 percent risk at anything you do with this kind of thing and I'm hoping I'll be in the 95 percent category."
