It's life in prison for actor Shelley Malil, who was sentenced by San Diego County Superior Court Judge Harry Elias on Thursday, the Associated Press reports.
In 2008, Malil stabbed his ex-girlfriend Kendra Beebe more than 20 times. The day after the pair had an argument, Malil showed up unannounced to Beebe's home and reportedly flew into a jealous rage when he found another man there. He then approached Beebe and stabbed her repeatedly with a steak knife. She suffered punctured lungs and wounds to her neck, chest, back and arms.
This past September, Malil, 45, took the stand in his own defense and claimed that he thought Beebe was someone else, who had been attacking him in the dark.
Additionally, Malil's attorney claimed his client had no intention of killing Beebe. The defense also attempted to question Beebe's character to the jury, saying that she was "a violent drama queen who tried to make men jealous," according to the AP.
But the defense tactics failed, and Malil was convicted by a jury for attempted premeditated murder and assault with a deadly weapon.
Malil (whom fans remember from the 2005 hit comedy The 40-Year-Old Virgin, in which he played Steve Carell's co-worker) addressed the court before his sentencing. "I want to do whatever I need to do to make sure I make right from the wrong that I did," he said. "Kendra Beebe did not deserve anything that happened to her. ... I can't even begin to imagine what she has been through."
Beebe also spoke up in court. "Despite the stab wounds he inflicted, I am alive," she said. Beebe (who met Malil online and said their relationship eventually became "volatile") also addressed Malil's behavior throughout the trail. "During the course of the trial it became clear he was an actor, but not a very good actor at that," she said. "His testimony was lie after lie after lie."
After the sentencing, Beebe told reporters she believed justice was served and hoped that Malil's apology was sincere.
While Malil is eligible for parole in 12 years, prosecutor Keith Watanabe said he could be out in as little as nine years, factoring in his time in prison already, as well as good behavior.
